Understanding the LGBTQ+ Community and Supporting the Foster Youth in Your Care

This course builds caregiver and child welfare professional competency in supporting LGBTQ+ youth through trauma informed, culturally responsive practice. Participants learn foundational SOGIE concepts, respectful communication, pronoun use, and strategies for creating affirming, safe, and inclusive placements. The training addresses risks faced by LGBTQ+ youth—including homelessness, victimization, and placement instability—and provides practical tools for advocacy, casework, and supporting youth during disclosure. This course helps strengthen caregiver skills, improve placement stability, and enhance child safety and well being.
